From Potchefstroom to Stanford: How Victor Asiwe Built a Top Career
Audio Narration

Victor Asiwe believes in doing things the hard way. This idea took him from a small town in South Africa to one of the best universities in the world.

Who is Victor Asiwe?

Victor is 27 years old and originally from Nigeria. He moved to Potchefstroom, a town in the North West province of South Africa when he was six. He taught himself how to code as a teenager because his mother was worried about computer science. He studied at the University of Cape Town (UCT) and later worked for Discovery Insure, building their pricing division.

His Big Achievement

Victor earned an MBA from Stanford Graduate School of Business in the United States. He graduated in the top 1% of his class and was one of only five students to get the top scholarship. This is a huge accomplishment because Stanford is often called the best business school in the world.

How Did He Do It?

Victor says the key is simple: "Find hard problems, surround yourself with great people, and then do hard things." He also believes in pushing himself. For example, while at UCT, he entered a one-handed Rubik's Cube competition. Even though he hadn't practiced in six months, he broke the African record! He solved it in 20 seconds (his best is 16 seconds).

What's Next for Him?

Victor now has two job offers and is looking at opportunities in Silicon Valley. He is also learning to play golf at the Stanford Golf Course. His advice to others: don't be afraid to take the hard path. It can lead to amazing places.
